Archive of life .... the 13th of May
Yesterday, on my timeline, a number of posts regarding that fateful incident that rocked our nation 50 years ago appeared.
For the first time since , Malaysians speak freely about their views, experiences. traumas and the lot about this hush hush affair.
I was a sweet seventeen teenage girl when the incident broke out. Readying for my upcoming SC/MCE exam, I was oblivious to the going ons . Then one day, ashen faced abah came home from town with this news.
Jangan pi mana mana. Dok rumah saja. La ni oghang dok begaduh.
News travelled slow those days. We didnt have any socmed. Nor did we have any radio or tv at home. So words of mouth were our source of information. Only occasionally we bought utusan Melayu the jawi version.
Then came the curfew.
Everything was on lock down. Schools and offices closed. We had to stay at home and wary of strangers.
Luckily nothing untoward happened in our village although our neighbours were predominantly Chinese.
On the other hands, we received rations from them.Mom got a handful of onions, garlics from them. They had tons of onions since all roads and shops closed.
Incidently, it was rumoured that a few life were lost in the state.
When, the curfew was over, it was school as usual. In my class where pupils of various ethnics studied together, the beginning was a bit sombre. We avoided discussing the incident.
But things werent the same in KL.
A known friend of our family went missing until today. Alfatihah to the poor soul.
Although my hometown was calm and peaceful on that fateful day, we were very careful wherever we went. It was not a nice experience.Fear was in the air.
There were lessons that could be learnt. Racial tension among the many races that make up the population of our beloved nation should be avoided. So too religions related differences.
Something that we must be aware of... menang jadi arang, kalah jadi abu.
So friends... abstain yourself from indiscriminately dishing out opinions in discuss forums pertaining to these delicate matters....race and religion.
Whats happening in Sri Lanka , Myammar and many more nations across the world could be an eye opener.
Lets live in peace not pieces.
Salam keamanan buat semua.Bye.
